Sidereal versus Tropical
Vedic (Eastern Astrology) traditionally uses the Sidereal calculations which measures the actual astronomical position of planets against the backdrop of the fixed-star constellations. Aries in the chart is calculated when the Sun passes through the observable fixed stars of the constellation of Aries and so on. With Genetic Matrix you can choose to use the Tropical calculations although they are not traditionally used in Vedic. The Tropical system is based upon the seasons and sets the beginning of Aries at the time of the Vernal Equinox. The Tropical system (Western Astrology) uses the first day of spring, March 21, as the beginning of the Sun in Aries.
Over 2000 years ago Tropical and Sidereal appeared to be the same calculations. Over time the calculations have shown to be different and have grown to be around 24 degrees difference, which is almost an entire zodiac sign difference. This is caused by the precession of the equinoxes where the vernal equinox drifts back slowly in relation to the fixed stars.
It can be surprising the difference in the systems to find that your Sun, Moon, Rising sign, etc are different than you have learned about in Western or Eastern Astrology depending on what you have learned in the past. There are 2 different perspectives when looking at Human Design and each has its own strengths. Human Design traditionally uses Tropical astrology, which is mostly used for understanding personalities. Sidereal is often used as predictive astrology.
